Math is a scary subject for most people. Few of us are comfortable finding a trinomial factorization. For others, it becomes a chore. That is why a math tutor, one of those few, is so helpful when it comes to completing math homework. It is safe to say that math is Greek, figuratively, because math is just another language with rules and principles. There is meaning behind each symbol used in math. And there are very few shortcuts that will encourage long-term understanding of math. When it comes to learning math, one need not just read math textbooks. Understanding the material is essential. After all, reading is useless if comprehension is not obtained.

Maybe you are not comfortable with math. That’s ok. We all have different strengths. If it takes you longer than most to do your math homework, you might consider getting a tutor. A DeansList tutor is a personal instructor who adapts to your learning needs and objectives. Moreover, a tutor will help you build a foundation in math that will support you throughout your professional career. Don’t make the error of avoiding math for the rest of your life. It is only a weakness if you refuse to learn it.

Many students have trouble understanding debits and credits. If you are completely confused, please continue reading or contact a DeansList tutor. First of all, debits do not always represent increase or decrease. Similarly, credits do not always represent increase or decrease. It depends on the type of account: asset, liability, or equity. When determining whether to debit or credit an account, consider the accounting equation: Assets = Liabilities + Owner’s Equity. Debits are used to increase asset accounts. Credits are used to increase both liability and owner’s equity accounts.

Assets

=

Liabilities

+

Owner’s Equity

Cash

Accounts Payable

Paid-In Capital

Accounts Receivable

Notes Payable

Retained Earnings

Prepaid Rent

Mortgage Payable

Treasury Stock

Contra accounts are closely associated with asset, liability and equity accounts. They are used to represent offsets to ordinary asset, liability, or equity accounts. For example, accumulated depreciation is a contra-asset account that reduces the value of total assets. Consequently, contra-asset accounts are increased with credits and decreased with debits, the reverse effect on normal asset accounts. Treasury Stock is a contra-equity account, because it reduces the total value of owner’s equity. Consequently, treasury stock is increased with debits and decreased with credits. If the concept of debits and credits still seems unclear, please don’t hesitate to contact a DeansList tutor who is qualified to explain debits and credits and help you apply them to your homework assignment.

July 23, 2009

Are stock prices predictable? The earliest known research concerning the predictability of stock prices was conducted by a mathematician named Louis Bachelier who claimed “contradictory opinions concerning [market] changes diverge so much that at the same instant buyers believe in a price increase and sellers believe in a price decrease.” He said, “It seems that the market, the aggregate of speculators, at a given instant can believe in neither a market rise nor a market fall, since, for each quoted price, there are as many buyers as sellers. The mathematical expecation of the speculator is zero.” In other words, the market is a fair game.

Bachelier’s research offered profound insight into the nature of modern financial markets. He claimed, “Clearly, the price considered most likely by the market is the true current price: if the market judged otherwise, it would quote not this price, but another price higher or lower.” In fact, the next price movement is independent of the current market price. No one can predict the future exactly, but certainty increases as the time horizon decreases. Moreover, with time, the range within which a stock price will move will expand. In fact, Bachelier showed that the price range is proportional to the square root of the time under consideration.

June 24, 2009

Some critics argue that globalization inevitably leads to the marginalization of the environmental and social costs borne by competition. It is unarguably in the interest of society to prevent the contamination and destruction of shared resources. However, they are wrong in crediting an increasing disregard for environmental and social costs to globalization and the competition element. Such costs are the result of failed judicial systems. The rule of law is a prerequisite to social order. A successful judicial system demands responsibility from individuals in their pursuits for economic success.

The most fundamental human interest is economic self-interest. The struggle in life began as a struggle for life. This struggle has not yet been overcome by millions of individuals – the battle is often lost. It is also true that international trade reduces the wages of low-skill U.S. citizens. Economic data reveals that international trade very slightly impacts the overall number of jobs. At the same time, it increases the wages of low-skill labor in foreign nations that trade with the U.S. Considering all of this, it does not hold that government should intervene to promote the preservation of domestic low-skill jobs. A free market for capital and labor is justified by the higher moral value placed on individual liberty, which includes the freedom to buy, sell, succeed, and fail.

An appreciable majority of the cases involving government intervention in the economy have led to effects that are the opposite of those intended. Minimum wage and other price controls are such cases that have destroyed the economic opportunities of millions and served only to benefit select groups. It is no surprise that monopolistic labor unions are the chief advocates of minimum wage price controls, nor is it shocking that economically-illiterate political leaders attempt to please the uneducated populace by using economic tools with effects they do not understand. Government intervention, including trade barriers such as tariffs and quotas have resulted in far worse outcomes than intended.

Globalization critics also argues that globalization leads to the increased tolerance of mergers and monopoly power. However, increased international trade does not necessarily produce relatively diminished consumer power. Some mergers will occur and monopolies might emerge, but these events do not preclude the presence and enforcement of anti-trust regulation. Besides, it is far easier for the common individual to diminish the power of a large business than to escape the stranglehold of powerful governments which command the loyalty of armies. It is a classic and seemingly perpetual mistake to associate altruism with political leadership.

The critics of globalization often complain about the movement toward national economic specialization. They claim that the concentration of production results in less job variety. A brief glimpse at history reveals that it was the concentration of farming that yielded, for the first time, crop surpluses. Soon, new professional opportunities emerged as resources were available for alternative allocation. Globalization critics assume that the mix of professions in the current job market has reached a climax and that new specialization does not create new job opportunities. With industry concentration, products are produced with the fewest resources, thereby reducing overall natural-resource usage rates. Furthermore, international trade tends to lead to partial specialization, rather than complete specialization, as cost differentials in trading economies begin to converge. Moreover, the concentration of industry assures more rigorous competition as target consumer markets begin to overlap.

June 23, 2009

Much criticism of the effects of intellectual property rights is justified. However, there is a motivation element that seems to be overlooked in most organized criticisms. It is impossible to measure the aggregate value of research projects rejected due to the economic loss to potential investors. This artificial monopoly might create enough incentive to pursue at one’s own economic risk the development of potentially miraculous discoveries. The argument that intellectual property should be shared is analogous to the argument that tangible private property should be shared. This is essentially an argument in support of collectivism, which inevitably yields the dissolution of the most valued personal freedoms.

Without formal intellectual private property rights, a creative individual would likely attempt to minimize the circulation of his ideas in order to maintain a local private monopoly. In effect, the wider world would not be exposed to potential social miracles. What incentive is there for an individual to spend his energy devising a complex good at his own risk just to observe another individual copy the design and take credit for the commercialization of that product? Ultimately, a compromise must be made, not to abolish intellectual property rights, but to define the appropriate duration of a copyright or patent which maximizes the welfare to society.

Globalization does not necessarily require the dissolution of national sovereignty. It does not lead to an increasing indifference toward social costs resulting from more intense competition. Nor does it require the concentration of economic power any more than an economy in autarky. The trade specialization implied in international free-trade models does not reduce, but enlarges the variety of professions in the long-run. Intellectual property rights aren’t necessarily a burden on society. One must consider lost opportunities due to economic barriers.

June 19, 2009

The U.S. health care market is widely considered a market failure. Clearly, there are inefficiencies. Millions of Americans do not have health care insurance, although they are able to access emergency medical services whenever needed. The trouble with the current health care market is not that greed has blinded the intrinsic altruistic nature of doctors, but that the market has lost, or has always lacked, a strong competitive element.

Economists almost unanimously agree that competition is the driving force of efficient markets. An efficient market involves the allocation of resources based on market-set prices, not government-set prices. The Federal government has recently proposed the reduction of Medicare and Medicaid benefits and is orchestrating a clever plan to convince the general public that medical professionals are overpaid. The apparent intention is to reduce the compensation received by medical professionals. In economics terms, this amounts to the administration of a price ceiling.

There is one consistent, predictable outcome of price ceilings – the amount of health care services demanded will exceed the amount of health care services offered. This can be demonstrated graphically or empirically (e.g. British dentistry market). The highly emotional advocates of nationalized health care argue that there is a moral obligation for the government to use taxpayer money to insure the uncovered population. The argument goes, in a nation as advanced and wealthy as the United States, no individual should be denied health care coverage.

Sit in the Front of Class

Show up to Every Class

Use a Calendar

Rewrite Notes After Each Class

Get a Tutor

We know that with a little determination and commitment to a few academic principles, college students can achieve the academic excellence needed to access the best jobs after graduation.

Sit in the Front of Class – This may be challenging at first, but students will find it difficult to get distracted by friends and easier to pay attention. Invite friends to sit with you, if necessary. They will likely benefit from the in-your-face lecture.

Show up to Every Class – It is very easy to avoid class. It is easier to get behind. It may only take one missed classed to set a student behind so far that they are working the rest of the semester catching up. This is a miserable feeling and experienced by most college students at some point.

Use a Calendar – Writing due dates down on paper or in your phone is an easy way to avoid the constant stress and nightmares of turning in homework late or worse – showing up late or missing an exam. This is the main source of stress for most college students, so avoid it by consolidating due dates from all classes after receiving the syllabus from each class.

Read Ahead – It is easier to get behind than it is to get ahead, but the benefits of reading the textbook before class will reduce stress and help students follow lectures. The questions that students develop while reading are often answered in the following lecture and provide the student with a more comprehensive understanding of the subject.

Rewrite Notes After Each Class – Professors usually speak faster than students can write, so students aren’t able to write down everything their professors say. As a result, students should be selective in the notes they write and consider writing down the most complex topics and providing network diagrams whenever possible. More importantly, students should rewrite their notes immediately after each lecture. This forces the student to question what the notes mean and provides an opportunity to add clarification and provide a meaningful set of notes to study before exams.

Get a Tutor – Even the best students get tutors. Getting a tutor will save students time and money; instead of studying countless hours, students can have an expert tutor explain topics in great detail in a matter of minutes. In return, students have more time to pick up more hours at work or have more leisure time. Studying is a matter of time and getting a tutor will help students get the most out of their study time and have time for other priorities.

There are more principles that will improve a student’s chances of reaching the Dean’s Honors List, but if a student follows these essential rules, the chance for achieving academic excellence will be greatly improved.
